Quick reply before I go to class. I don't think that we should listen to secular music, because I think that when God transforms your way of thinking , there's no way for that type of music to attract you. I think instead you want to listen to something that you can relate to as a believer and to Glorify God by doing so. I personally can't rrelate to secular music , all they talk about is broken heart, love (although disstorted), sex, violence ,etc... Besides those people don't have a purpose in thier music to Glorify God or for any edification of our lives!!! When I was about 12-13 I didn't have a relationship with God and would always listen to both secuar and christian music and thought there was nothing wrong. But when I truly gave my life to Jesus he transformed my way of thinking and before I knew it I stopped listening to secular music (hard as it was!!) but GoD calls us to seperate from this world and not to conform in it but to be different and transform our minds so that we may learn of God's erfect will and plans for our lives. (you can find this in Romans (12:1-3)well gotta go ! God Bless Always.

There is decent secular music with nice meanings and good messages..........I do not see anything wrong with love songs or other nice everyday subjects...I think God gave us feelings and ways to express them...........
I am a fun of Richard Marx and he has some amazing songs .........he also explains whats behind each of his songs ............for example the song Angel's lullaby is about his sons............

There is lots of good artists out there ........
You should not be in a hurry condemning everyone and everything........

I also know that Church is preparing to be presented as a pure spotless and radient bride ,so if God is telling u not to listen to secular music then don't ............

I hope I make sense Smile

Good response theo, however i don't think that they're doing any condeming...the bottom line comes to this...does it bring you into worship to God, does it refresh your spirit, does it encourage you to continue to walk in the faith, there is alot here. does it edify, does it bring glory and honor.

there are love songs, BUT, if you're a single person, those might not be appropriate for you. they might lead to temptation that well, we might have trouble getting out of.

Oh I agree with you cheers! Oh and I wasn't condeming anyone .. if it sounded that way sorry! Smile And what cheers said is something that we should ask ourselves "does it bring you into worship to God, does it refresh your spirit, does it encourage you to continue to walk in the faith, there is alot here. does it edify, does it bring glory and honor" - This is how we will know if we are pleasing GOD , which should be our purpose in EVERYTHING that we do , say etc.. God Bless!!

"Everything is permissible but not everything is benefitial." Be selective in what you listen to. Be wise. We've all got the Spirit of God in us so let Him lead the way. We need to have a close walk with God to know what He thinks about stuff. You'll never go wrong if you're livin the way God wants you to live. YEAH!
Everyone's got different views on stuff. Views that are based on their own lives and convictions. Yeah we've got similar convictions in the faith that must not be compromised. But other stuff...we need to let God lead the way in our lives. Your walk with Him is personal. Ask Him what He thinks and let Him answer you. That's my point of view. Oh yah, and don't condemn other people's view - Jesus loves us all. Wink

I personally would not listen to the radio because it is so unhibited. If you have a couple singers or bands that doesn't give you conviction, then its ok. Enjoy all kinds of music. Just remember what Satan's "forte" was/is! Music! Its very influential, so just pray about it if its a concern and don't listen to anything that you wouldn't listen to in front of Jesus.

Hey whats up yall,
We were created to worship and glorify God only. Our i guess you could say our job as humans on this earth is to give God glory and spread his gospel. I understand that there are a lot of songs with good messages, but the bottom line is that if it doesnt glorify God, then who does it glorify? Read Isaiah 13/14 when satan wanted to glory for himself and was cast out of heaven. Like Gabrielle said everything is not good for me, and as christians followers of the cross we need to understand that. I have a friend who like Kenny G, but i spit to him the facts that when Kenny wrote that song he might have been singing to his girl, family, whatever, but his song was not to God. Its time to mark the difference between Gods glory and secular tragedy.

Im out

I don't believe that all "secular" music is a tragedy. I believe music is to be enjoyed. If secular music doesn't glorify God, that doesn't mean its glorifying anything. It doesn't mean secular music can't be enjoyed. Go by your convictions. It is said that we are to have a balanced life. Keep God #1 ALWAYS, but if you like smooth jazz, folk, classical, country, or rock and roll, then enjoy it. I just ask myself, "Would I listen to this if Jesus were standing next to me?" Well God is in the room with us every second, so I know that when I do listen to my selected music, it isn't distasteful.

This is an interesting topic of discussion...I listen to certain secular artists/songs every now and then. Some of them are really good and do not sing bad songs. However, it's not something I wish to do ALL the time, b/c, like most everyone else has said, does it glorify God; does it bring me closer to Him?

I believe God created us to express ourselves in an acceptable manner, and I believe that we can write/listen to/enjoy songs about REAL love, and other everyday things that we face out there. BUT it's probably best if they are written/sung from a Christian perspective.

That being said, I don't think it means that ALL secular music is bad. BUT, like someone else said, if God is convicting you against that, then don't do it, no matter what others say. I have prayed about it, and I will NOT listen to certain things b/c God sort of pricks my heart about it, but then there are others (very few, I might add) that I am okay with listening to.

Confusing? lol I hope not..
