Yes, CHristians should sing and play Christian music. But I think we should careful about being extremely critical about musicians or just chritians who play secular music. My thing is what kind of lyrics are being sang. We have to be patient and tolerant with any brother who patronizes secular music for the same reson you would expect them to treat you if you did something they question, as long as its not evil.
What do you think...

I guess we need Doctors and Christian Doctors...
mailmen and Christian mailmen....
cashiers and Christian cashiers...

Just a scripture for thought:

"Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15)

maybe i'll elaborate more later..

Hi there Anita,
Hmm...upon reading your post, I wondered when asking this question were you refering to Salvador doing a cover of Heaven? Or are you referring to Christians who play secular music in general.
I guess in situations like these, you got to see the fruit that comes out of the lives of these guys (Salvador or the rest of them out there). The Word of God says, "Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit." Matthew 7:17,18
To me I've learnt to look for the fruit both in my own life and in the life of Christians around me. I'm young and I need good role models around me especially Christians to follow and inspire me. Like you I used to be very confused in many areas. But when I began to read God's Word and let it sink in my life, I began to know more and more how to look for good role models around me.
This is one of the meathods I use - look for the fruit. Some people say they are Christians but it's only a name...not a life. Even for us, make sure that it's not just a name but a life that we're livin!
Hope this helped you in some ways! God bless you my friend!

God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever!

Thanks! Gabrielle I totally agree with you about the guys, they are awsome....I was talking more about singers that now are singing to the world, for example I have heard Jaci Velasquez, she used to sing songs that would honor God but now her songs are not very godly...so, I don't know

Ohhh Biz....I don't know what you are talking about!!!

Hey there Anita,
Hmm....I don't really know much about Jaci Velasquez and what's she's been up to. I know she's got an amazing voice - that's for sure.
But you know what? Another thing I've learnt is to not judge or rather not think too much about why people do what they do especially if they are people whom we don't come into contact with. It's easy to speculate and guess and have all sorts of ideas but it's also harmful for the party involved. Remarks passed might not be true and when a remark has been passed, there's no way of taking it back.
So beware of the stuff that we hear and what we say about people especially people whom we don't have direct contact with. Only and unless we've seen or heard things directly from the person him/herself can we take it as real.
But like you said Anita, if you've heard her songs and they don't sound so godly anymore, then make a decision yourself on what you should do about it. To listen or not to listen - that's the question! Hahaha. It's a very personal thing.
But you know what Anita, as there are people who are going away from the good path they were once on, there are also a whole lot of people out there who still walking that straight and narrow road with faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. So what I would suggest to you is, look to them as great examples - imitate them as they imitate our Lord Jesus Christ. Salvador guys are a few of the many who are still walking that journey in faith!
Don't be discouraged with what you see or hear but encourage yourself with the great things that God is going in our time and age and pray for those who are going astray.
Hope this blessed you girl!

God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever!

Hey Anita, I came across this interview with Jaci by CCM. Don't know if you've read it before. But it's definately worth a read and maybe it might answer some of the questions that you have about this artist.

I think it's ok for a Christian to record songs that aren't what we would consider "Praise or Worship" songs.....I see being a recording artist as a job, these folks do this for a living. I do believe though being a Christian we do have a responsibility to represent Father God and in doing so we have to conform to His Will and not the worlds. So I would disagree with a Christian recording an album filled with profanity and immoral content, although I would not judge them for it, I would not support it. One of the bands I simply LOVE is The 77's , they are christians but tend to record songs about life's challenges rather than Praise Songs.....thier songs are very deep and personal. Thier's my 2 cents foe what thier worth LOL Wink

Now it's my turn to add some words. The questions that I always ask myself about the music that I listen to is, "Is this pleasing to the Lord? Does is praise Him? Does it edify me or tear me down in any way?" I think those are good questions to ask yourself, especially when you question the actions of Christian music artists.

However, I think what Gabrielle also said about not being too quick to judge is so true.

quote:
Another thing I've learnt is to not judge or rather not think too much about why people do what they do especially if they are people whom we don't come into contact with. It's easy to speculate and guess and have all sorts of ideas but it's also harmful for the party involved. I mean, look at all of the great artists out there in the secular music industry who sing great songs about great people or great events in their lives, and yet, have the grace to do it in a manner that doesn't offend others.

I can totally understand where you're coming from with this topic. I used to ask myself that same question all the time, and after praying about it, I found my answer, which I shared with you above.

In the secular music world, you'd be surprised to find out who is a Christian, studio musicians, people who run the studios, office staff.

At Christmas, I was looking for a different version of "Mary, did you know" to sing at a women's dessert. I wanted a style than what I've heard before. I stumbled onto a cool R&B version from an CD called "NOEL 11 Elegant Christmas Classics." I was curious as to who the vocalist was and had to find out.

I finally found out it was a guy named Chris Willis. Checking out his resume credits on www.allmusic.com . I was shocked to find out how long his credits went and with whom....

This guy worked on American Idol, doing vocal arranging. He also did vocal arranging for Kelly Clarkson's first CD, worked w/dc Talk, Ricky Martin, Mark Knofler, Clay Aiken, Peabo Bryson, Michael McDonald and the list goes on and on. He is a believer. What an opportunity to share the love of Jesus.

As believers it's so easy to set a standard of how we think it should be. The Word says we need to edifying one another, this is true, but just as important, if not more, Christians are regular people, in and out of the work place who need to let their light shine to those who are living in the dark, whether they are musicians, big names or someone working at McDonalds. The music isn't just for our enjoyment or our encouragement, but the lost need to know who He is. Which is why I support buying a Christian artist's CD from a non Christian store, such as Target or Tower Records. I believe it sends a message to the record companys and stores that there is a desire for Christian music.

Okay, Okay, it's late, I'll get off my soapbox now.
