I believe there is a way to go to the prom and have fun and all, without all the drinking and parties that go on. I think it would vary depending on the situation...you know, like how wild the school is and the kids that go to it and all that.

Yeah Nadine, you're probably right...in most instances it's not a good thing. But I know of some Christian schools who have "proms" where it's all just fun and games and a reason to get together...

It's sort of like (I'm just using this as an example) churches holding fall festivals in place of Halloween. It's a reason to get together and have fun, and it keeps your young people busy instead of wanting to go out trick-or-treating.

Prom? It's not the norm to have a prom here in Malaysia. But I must say that it's kind of up and coming now.
Hmm...Personally, I wouldn't mind going to a prom cos it's something new to me and I love trying new thing - only if it's good. Big Grin
Also, you may go to a prom, but you may choose not to get involved in the bad things that go on during the prom. I don't think everything's bad is it? Correct me if I'm wrong - as I've never been to one! Hahaha.

As I read this question, I am reminded of the mentality I was raised around. As latino christians, we are raised in a gospel that is very prohibitive. We have come a long ways however. I can remember 7 years ago, being a Senior in HS. I heard the same discussions. Is it really wrong to go to the prom? To be honest with you, drinking is not part of the prom. What school can alow legal drinking for minors? Drinking is NOT part of the prom. It is part of the illegal parties that people have afterwords. I believe there is no new temptation, just the same temptation to party as there is at any other point during High School. No body can force you to jump in a car and go to an after party. It is a matter of choice, discipline and selfcontrol.

Prom should be a time of fun with your friends. It is true that you can do that elsewhere, but this is a formal environment (a modern day ball) to celebrate your high school achievemnets.

I know many christian hispanics feel that dancing is bad (I heard this growing up) but is it really? I think, once again as conservatives, we are taught that things are bad, just because they don't want you to go overboard. For example, I agree that bumping and grinding would not be Godly. Any dancing with sexual implications is wrong. But just "boogying down" with your friends, moving to the music with your friends is a sign of happiness. The Bible says that "He's turned our mourning into dancing." Why not dance to celebrate? However, many of us were taught that dancing was a sin because they don't want us to go to the extreme of grinding or doing anything sexual.

Going to the prom doesn't make you like a non-christian. I feel that another way we are raised is to not be around non-christians. I believe this is more of a matter of environment, or the extent to which we associate with them. Keep in mind that we are to be a light. We are to be the salt of the earth. What good is the salt, if it is never shaked out of the shaker? You would never taste it on your food. If the light was never around darkness, then who would it shine upon? Other lights? To be at prom might mean being around non-christians, but this is an awesome opportunity! Show them how to have good, clean fun. That is what I did with my friends. Shake some salt on them. Shaking salt in a secular club would be a different story. Going to a night club where there is drinking is walking into dangerous territory.

There is so much that can be said on this topic. I went to prom, but never went to homecoming and other dances just because it didn't draw my attention, and I wasn't a dancer. But when I went to prom, I had good clean fun with my friends, celebrating my final weeks of High School, and I was a light to the non-christians. I hope this helps with your question. Just remeber to always stand for Christ!

i went to my prom and had fun and dancerd the night away, and had no drugs or stuff like that. God does want you to have fun too. in Psalm 149:3 it says "let them praise His name with dancing..." and there are many more scripturs about dancing. ofcouse God wants you to have self controle and remember that if outher people know that you are christian that they are going to look and see what you are doing. you dont't want to be rememberd as the uptight christan, do you? maby no one has sayed this to you guys before, but it's all about being in a relationship with Christ, not about the religon. i say prom is one of the main events in high school that you can't miss

I understand what your trying to say starspindancer03, I agree with you when you say that should praise them with dancing, BUT... I don't know about your school but they are not going to play music that glorifies God at prom... you know.. so how can you praise him with music that doesn't glorify Him? Smile

I dont think that going to prom is wrong, personally for me I had a lot of fun when I went, and I am looking forward to this years prom seeing as how it will be my last.

I dont think that it is wrong to go, what is wrong is to go and act ungodly, dont compromise your values, or morals, but go and enjoy yourself, have fun with your friends. I think that if you are at peace with the decisions that you make then everything will be fine. Trust yourself and trust in God to let his light shine through you even if you are at prom.

Lastly, all I can say is this, high school is a one in a life time experience, you will never get the chance to go to your high school prom again. Enjoy what you do and just always remember that you and only you can decide what is wrong or right for you.

I say go to your PROM girl, you'll regret it if you don't go. It's your last year of high school, you do'nt want to miss out. I'm not telling you to go get drunk and get crazy...............some people do but go have fun.

I think that it is a good thing just because you are only in high school once in a life time and if you have GOD in your heart you should be able to make good choices and not do things against him (GOD) if you know what I mean. Like temptation is always out there but you need to make sure that you are strong enough to say no when no is needed to be said.
