Here is a GREAT NEW article on EURWEB.com

GEORGE HUFF'S DIVINE APPOINTMENT
‘AI’ was a literal God send for then struggling student

A real life Steve Urkel,” he tempered the musings of kids at school. Behind the bug-eyed glasses and high water pants, he had a voice that would not be mocked.

Those same bullies would probably kick themselves now if they knew they were antagonizing one of the future’s most memorable and talented American Idol finalists: George Huff.

He had no clue that in his adulthood he would have to tolerate the menacing comments of an irritable Englishman before an entire nation. In spite of Simon Cowell’s blistering criticism Huff was a champion in the end.

He landed a contract with Word Records (rejecting three other offers), the only Idol to go the Gospel route, he released his first CD, “Miracles” in 0ctober 2005. The singer recently debut his first video on the Gospel Music Channel, which recently took the number one video slot. Continuing to reap the harvest from his ‘Idol’ days, he also served as a contestant coach for Gospel Dream.

The huge smile he seems to wear permanently is like the tears of a clown, covering his hardships. Surviving a childhood tinged by low income and a broken home, he attended college but the vicious cycle of poverty persisted when his scholarship was exhausted. Trying out for American Idol was a last resort. It was one of the most courageous moves he’s ever made.

Mature beyond his years, the 25 year-old former fry cook has came to his family’s rescue when they were uprooted from his birthplace, New Orleans. Dallas, TX is their new place of residence. George recalls how he has grown form adversity and God’s leading in exercising his purpose.

Mona Austin: Did Hurricane Katrina put your career on hiatus for a while?

George Huff: One of the hardest things to do was being on the road and having to deal with Katrina all at the same time. I’ve never had to juggle traumatic situations like that. I continued to do my dates and stayed on the road consistently. . .You go through so much that you learn how to trust God not just for the things t hat you know are coming, but the impossible things that you tend to forget tat he can make possible. You build a stamina, you laugh, you cry and all that, but then you know I’ve been here before. Since I know God did something before He’s the same God yesterday, today and the day before and He’ll do it again.

MA: . . .Tell me about your testimony that led you to this moment.

GH: I left home at 17 and moved to Oklahoma and I attended the University of Oklahoma and which I majored in vocal music education and when I would come back home to visit I would go back to church and bless the Lord!

MA: Did you have a desire to work in entertainment at that time?

GH: . . .My major had to do with the study of voice. The way I got into the performance aspect of it was when my money got funny and my change got strange. I was like ‘what can I do to find money to pay these bills to get back in school?’ I auditioned for the opera company and landed two major roles. Elixir of Love and Johnny Scheggi. . .all of this was in Italian—mind you I had never taken Italian; I took Spanish in high school and because they’re close I was able to learn it at a good speed. I didn’t know what I was saying in English, but it worked. You know I was desperate to do whatever I needed to do in order to succeed in college.

I shied away from the stage. There were certain atmospheres I was afraid to be in when it came down to performing. . . I go real paranoid and felt that the whole world would talk about me. With American Idol I was like ‘Oh no.’

MA: You had a remarkable stage presence on Ameican Idol. I would think that came from your involvement and performance in the church.

GH: Somewhere in my mind and my heart (I didn’t get the scholarships or anything), but I have to say that I am in the realm of my divine destiny and purpose calling in Christ Jesus. I say that because. . .God brought me to a place in life through my circumstances to a point where I was forced into this place that I dreamed of being. It was my desire to be on the stage, but I wasn’t confident in who God made me and that was somebody that was different. He had to allow me to be out of school and all the other stuff and come to my last resort to step out into a place of unfamiliarity which I feared. . .God began to talk to me through the scripture And as he began to talk to me I would get motivated and empowered to venture off into the place of unfamiliarity not knowing what would happen, but knowing that it was God who sent me . . .The Kingdom suffereth violence and the violent taketh by force. When I heard that scripture, I knew that it was God that had released me to go audition for American Idol. Mind you, I was scared because everything Simon had said, I didn’t want to hear. But I had to tell myself. . .if you get that far deal with it. Surprisingly, God opened up a window of heaven and poured out blessings and I had to change my way of thinking. Don’t fear how you look, as far as looking like these other kids. I believe that if God hadn’t made me the way I was I wouldn’t have made it as far in the competition.

MA: It sounds like you led with your internal image, but I believe Simon commented that your outward appearance was older looking. How did that make you feel?

GH: The whole time it was hilarious, even in the audition process in Hollywood Simon would look over at Paula and Randy and would start twirling his thumbs. Every time I would step onto the stage he said something to the effect that I was old fashioned, my voice was old, everything about me was old. He had a good time with me . . .

MA: Mandisa had to sue the love of God to deal with him.

GH: Mine was more internal because I was afraid of speaking out. I didn’t want to say something that would jeopardize my chances. But at the end, when they selected the final thirty-two he said, ‘George, you’re a nice guy with a nice voice but I just don’t see the star quality.’. . .I was thinking he held on to me all this time to tell me I didn’t have what it takes? I felt that I deserved to be there like at least ten of those people. So I spoke out because I felt like this was my last chance--

MA: What did you say to Simon Cowell to put him in check?

GH: I said ‘Simon, if you put me through to the next round, you’re going to see star quality!’ He said, ‘Well George you have four days.’ And I walked off the stage. . . .The same Simon Cowell who told me all of that stuff chose me as his wildcard pick to be in the top twelve.

MA: America was excited that you made it.

GH: . . .behind the scenes everybody knew that I had it harder. My time got easier once the live segments started coming on. So when they called me back I was shocked.

MA: Your excitement appeared to be genuine.

GH: I was an alternate, but my chances were very slim. I didn’t think for a second that I would get a call back. . . .I asked myself ‘Did I give all that I knew to give?’ And I thought about it and said ‘No.’ Is aid if I get called back I’m gonna give my all and just do it.

I’m real thankful because American Idol has opened so many doors for me and a lot of doors that I would have like to have walked through I had to put on hold because first things first. At some point I’ll get into the theatrical side, acting and Broadway.
