On the other hand, in moments like this, it should be about him and what he needs instead of the other way around. Most people don't mind knowing or seeing -through visible tears- that they are deeply loved by others, especially if they're getting ready to go off to war. Having been in the reserves prior to 9/11, I can tell you those young soldiers live for every bit of attention and affection they can get, especially when they're leaving and don't know what's going to happen next. A proper send-off is in order and will give him a few good memories to sustain him while he's away.
I'd go. I'd definitely go, no matter how difficult it might be to say goodbye and no matter how much snot-crying I might do. These are the kinds of moments you regret if you miss them. Trust me. I've lived long enough to have accumulated a few regrets. To borrow from the stage, there are no dress rehearsals.
