I hate to admit that I just lately heard this song while on the Music Boat cruise. However, I immediately identified with it; my family's story is very similar. When very young, my son was told by a relative that he was black. Of course, he only new that as a crayola he used to color pictures with. He became upset and started crying. When I tried to comfort him, he explained, "but I'm not black! Daddy is black, I'm brown and your are peach." What a wonderful example of how racism is a learned behavior! Even today (at 28 years old) my son is proud of his heritage, going so far as having a tatoo put on his arm that says 50/50.
