Well, being a little unconventional, I'd planned to celebrate turning 40 last year (2004) by getting a small tattoo of a ladybug on my back. Peter Parker, who's very conservative, thought this was completely freaky but was ready to drive me to some place sanitary to have it done because you don't turn 40 every day.

And then I found out I was pregnant. So goodbye tattoo.

At this point I think I'd rather avoid the risk of some communicable disease and the pain. I really don't think the Angelina Jolie look is very attractive.

i don't a whole bunch of tattoos but i would like one little small tattoo in some not normal place where i can show it off when i want but it mostly stays hidden and if i gain weight it wont grow too much and look discusting....i thought a little heart/peace sign would be cool...it would go with my "hippie" side

J.F., "Peter Parker" is the name I call my husband on this board because he looks like a little a 45 year old version of Peter Parker and he's just kind of square like that, but is without question, an all-around great guy. Not flashy. Clothes don't match very often.Very quiet, modest, super-hard worker. He's always saving someone from something or other. He certainly saved me a time or two or three or four...

I recently really wanted to get a tattoo...but then I was told by a lot of "upstanding Christian leaders" in my church that it was biblically not a good thing to do.

Anyone wanna tell me what they think about that? Confused

I just thought, far be it from me to purposefully do what I knew was said to be wrong...

Obviously, you guys think differently. So..there, convince me that I'm wrong ok? Smile

Well, obviously, since I considered doing it, I wasn't terribly concerned about the biblical implications of such an act.

(Someone can now accuse me of moral relativism or some such something. Go ahead. I can take it.)

However, I was concerned about infections like hepatitis and worse. I'm sure there are many safe, clean places to have this done as there are millions of people the world over who have not expired from getting a tattoo.

But you asked about biblical stuff...

Off the top of my head, there is a ceremonial law in Leviticus 19 that forbids cutting the body for the purposes of mourning the dead and concludes with printing any "marks" upon the body. Deutoronomy I believe, echoes this same admonition and there are a few other places, Jeremiah, etc. where it's mentioned. However, this is in association with mourning and it's also widely known that many Hebrews participated in some of these mourning rituals anyway.

I think this is an issue that comes down to inward motivation and good common sense.

In my case my motive was quite possibly, likely even, okay it just was, a bit off, and I probably knew that which is why I never went ahead and did it even after I safely could. It probably had more to do with just saying to heck with convention and what is generally socially acceptable here, as a "mom," in favor of walking a little more on the naughty side of life because I suppose I felt at 40, I'd "earned it."

And perhaps, at the very bottom of it, I was really only kicking against the bricks of aging...

So what you are saying is that it all comes down to a matter of motivation...WHY you wanna get the tattoo done.

I'm thinking that most of the time, people get tattoos to attract attention..

That isn't my motivation at all really...if I got one done, it would mean something to me, something that had significant value to me and was special...what do you think about that? Bad or good?

What I'm saying is that motives should be considered heavily.

If you can accomplish the same result with a piece of jewelry that is special and has meaning to you, I'd go with the jewelry.

There are health issues. And you will get older. I don't think I've met anyone with a tattoo in his or her 40s that doesn't wish to Jesus and all the saints in heaven that they hadn't done it. If they could get rid of it painlessly without all the scarring, they would. As you age the inks fade, your skin stretches, no matter where you put it on your body, the tattoo that looks so sexy when you're 18 looks pretty gross when you're 50.

Even if it is like the tiniest tiny thing in the world in a very very inconspicuous place? Confused

I can't get any more piercings, I vowed to myself I would stop at 8. Roll Eyes

It's addicting though, I do want more.

Forgive me. I was never very good at math.

4 + 3 = 7.

Where is the 8th piercing?

That's okay. My cousin, the accountant, had her BB pierced too. When she got pregnant, though, the BB-ring became impossibly uncomfortable. It also freaked her mother out pretty significantly.
