Turn your house into a gym
Sure Nicole C. Mullen works out at the gym sometimes and doubles her efforts before she heads out on tour. She even keeps a treadmill in her house (though, as she says, the machine is lonely from a year and a half of neglect). But as a wife and mother, there are plenty of opportunities to exercise in her daily life. Here is how Mullen fills her day with mini-workouts:

1. Taking advantage of the stairs in her home, Mullen runs up and down them even when she isn’t chasing after her three children.

2. Whether carrying a child, the laundry or groceries, Mullen trys to “make it athletic.”

3. “There are times when I get down on my hands and knees to clean the floors instead of using a mop,” Mullen says. This gives her both a cleaner floor and a workout.

4. She practices her dance routines through her house and not just while in a dance studio or while on stage.

“E” is for hair and nails
Vocalists have to be especially careful about the medications they consume because certain drugs can dry out the vocal chords. Nicole C. Mullen tries to stick with vitamins and other natural remedies to avoid harmful side effects. One of her favorites is vitamin E, which she says not only makes hair and nails strong, but also stimulates the brain.

Postpartum intervention
Most women who have been pregnant know getting back into shape after giving birth is not easy. Lack of sleep, the resulting lack of energy and increased demands on their time make exercising and cooking healthful meals almost impossible. Sadly, there was no quick fix for Nicole C. Mullen. Instead, she did everything she could to sweat off the weight. “I was doing sit-ups, I was running on the treadmill, I was dancing a whole lot,” she remembers. “I was drinking a lot more water than I normally do and cutting out breads. I had to work on that one!”
